Neighbors Helping North Carolina is a Political Action Committee (PAC) founded and operated by the North Carolina Association of REALTORS®.
Its Primary Purpose: To raise voluntary funds from NCAR members and then use those funds to make direct political contributions to candidates for office.
Its Goal: To support candidates, regardless of political party, who understand and advocate for issues related to private property rights, homeownership, and a strong real estate market.
Neighbors Helping North Carolina: Is a state PAC that is regulated by the North Carolina State Board of Elections. It is the primary vehicle for NCAR to make indirect financial contributions to candidates running for offices in North Carolina.
This money comes from member dues and other association revenue. The PAC then advocates for candidates with the funds.
Influence: The size of the contributions demonstrates the immense financial influence NCAR wields in state politics. A state PAC with over $1.2 million at its disposal by mid-year can significantly impact key legislative races.
The "Neighbors Helping North Carolina" PAC, backed by the North Carolina Association of REALTORS®, actively opposes aggressive rental code enforcement, arguing that excessive regulation imposes costly and burdensome requirements on property owners. The PAC endorses and financially supports candidates who advocate for limiting local government oversight of rental properties, promoting instead what they frame as "common-sense" policies that protect landlords' investments and profitability. By prioritizing the interests of property owners, the PAC works to elect officials who resist tenant-protection measures, such as strict habitability standards, mandatory maintenance timelines, or rent control, positioning itself as a defender of property rights and a vocal opponent of policies it views as harmful to the rental housing business.
NC Newsline reported "Neighbors Helping North Carolina (NHNC) spent $471,000 in 2023 on mailers and other messages to elect city officials from Brevard to Goldsboro. It’s doubtful many voters knew that NHNC’s cash came entirely from the NC Association of Realtors and its national counterpart. Developers, home builders and others are increasingly using artificial front groups to mask their identity and sway local elections.
Ten NHNC-backed candidates won and five lost in 2023. For example, it spent $41,765 to help Chris Carney become Mooresville’s mayor; $135,823 to reelect Marjorie Molina and Tariq Bokhari to Charlotte’s city council; $80,090 to replace two Fayetteville council members with Malik Davis and Lynn Greene; and $34,545 on Zack Lilly’s failed bid to become Goldsboro’s mayor."
Good luck to Beard’s competitors.
Who’s TREBIC?
TREBIC is a non-profit, pro-business coalition comprised of seven member associations involved in all aspects of the real estate development and building industries. It acts as a unified lobbying voice for these industries in the cities of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point, and their surrounding counties.
Who Makes Up TREBIC?
MEMBER ASSOCIATIONS:
Greensboro Builders Association
High Point Area Builders Association
Home Builders Association of Winston Salem
Piedmont Triad Apartment Association
NAIOP Piedmont Triad Chapter
TREBIC's primary mission is to advocate for public policies that encourage and facilitate real estate development and construction. Their key positions often place them at odds with tenant advocacy groups and those pushing for stronger rental regulations.
They typically:
Oppose Strict Rental Code Enforcement: They argue that aggressive inspection programs and overly stringent housing codes create financial burdens for landlords and developers, stifle new construction, and ultimately reduce the supply of housing, driving up costs.
Advocate for Landlord Interests: They lobby against policies like mandatory rental licensing and just-cause eviction regulations.
Promote Development-Friendly Policies: They actively lobby for:
Streamlined permitting processes.
Lower impact fees on new development.
Zoning changes that allow for higher density (when it benefits developers).
Tax policies favorable to property owners and real estate investments.
Engage in Political Endorsements: Like NCAR, TREBIC interviews candidates and makes endorsements in local city council and county commissioner races based almost exclusively on a candidate's alignment with their pro-development, pro-landlord agenda.
